Delos is a place where the weight of history is physically felt. The island was the sacred centre of the ancient Cycladic world — birthplace, in mythology, of Apollo and Artemis — and at the height of its commercial power in the 2nd century BC it was the most important trading port in the Mediterranean, home to merchants from Egypt, Rome, Arabia, and across the known world. Today it is uninhabited and open only for daytime visits. The site rewards several hours of slow, unhurried walking: the Terrace of the Lions (five archaic marble guardians remaining from an original nine, their originals in the site museum), the House of Dionysus with its extraordinary floor mosaics still in place, the Sacred Lake, the ancient theatre. No overnight stays are permitted, which gives Delos a peculiar, permanent quality — visited but never inhabited, held in perpetual archaeological suspension under the Aegean light.
