Iraklia is the most accessible of the Small Cyclades — the ferry from Naxos takes a couple of hours — and the ideal introduction to this miniature, undervisited archipelago. The island has two main beaches (the port beach at Agios Georgios and the wider Livadi beach), several walks connecting them, and one genuine standout attraction: the Cave of Agios Ioannis, a stalactite cave above a beach accessible via a 30-minute path through maquis. The cave becomes a pilgrimage site on August 28th when the local community celebrates the feast day of Agios Ioannis with a religious service inside the cave — an experience that is genuinely moving if you happen to arrive on the right day. The population is small and welcomingly warm. Best combined with Schinoussa and Koufonisia on a Small Cyclades island hop to get the full picture of what this corner of the Aegean offers.
